The distinction between innovation and invention is often confused in modern debate, despite their clear differences. Thus, it is common to see, in references, regulations or forums, that both concepts are used interchangeably. And that is a problem.
In the past it seems that they had it clearer, since Latin defines ‘inventio’ as discovery and ‘innovare’ as altering things by introducing novelty. This says it all!
As is often the case, the difference is not merely semantic, since it sets the underlying understanding on how we progress, technology-wise. Both concepts are essential in our development, but each one has its distinct purpose and process within an ecosystem.
And recognizing this distinction is crucial to fostering coherent, future-oriented technological development.
